Emergency crews are assessing potential wind damage throughout the region. Forecasters say the mountains could get 4 to 6 feet of snow through Sunday.

Nearly 8,500 San Diego Gas & Electric customers were without power early Wednesday, and Caltrans was preventing high-profile vehicles from using part of Interstate 8 in the East County due to fierce winds generated by the first wave of a frigid Canadian storm.

Kyle Griffith was driving on Friars Road near Fashion Valley Road in the Mission Valley area shortly before 2:30 a.m. when a eucalyptus tree blew over in the wind and fell onto his car.He said he kept driving through the tree branches before pulling over. “I kept going, blasting through it, but it totaled the car,” he told OnScene TV. He said he was uninjuredThe system also dropped more than a half-inch of rain in some areas along with snow.

“We’re going to have precipitation for the next four to five days,” said Phil Gonsalves, a weather service forecaster. Several school districts have canceled classes because of the wild weather. They include the Julian Union Elementary, Julian Union High, Mountain Empire Unified and Spencer Valley school districts, according to the county Office of Education.
