A large cold air mass is set to bring freezing temperatures to more parts of the country next week and some much-needed snowfall to our alpine resorts, writes Sky News Australia Meteorologist Bradlyn Oakes.

Runs that should have been covered in a thick white blanket were largely exposed, with major NSW resorts including Thredbo and Selwyn responding accordingly by closing their ski lifts over the King's Birthday long weekend.

More than 20cm has been recorded at Mount Hotham, Falls Creek and Perisher, with the latter opening its Village 8 chairlift ahead of the second weekend of the ski season. On top of that, we also expect some light snow and cool temperatures over the coming days to add to what is already on the ground in alpine regions. The next snow dump looks set to happen towards the end of this weekend, when a strong front - paired with an upper atmosphere pattern conducive to colder temperatures - is expected to push through the southeast on Sunday and into Monday.Throughout the ski fields in the Australian Alps, we are likely to see another 20 to 30cm accumulating.

There is a chance that snow will fall along the Mount Lofty Ranges, which forms part of the Adelaide Hills on the South Australian capital's eastern border, and the Flinders Ranges.
