Tracy Warren uses health IT and data analytics to find superior treatment protocols for premature babies
Warren is not a technologist by trade. She graduated with degrees in accounting and finance, spending the bulk of her early career as a venture capital investor in health technology companies. It was in these roles that she learned how to observe industry patterns and challenges as well as which teams were best able to execute on a business.
In the absence of standardized, practical care plans for preemies, Warren and her co-founders are focused on how to combine data sets to better arrive at new treatment protocols. They then apply advanced data analytics to discern patterns in the tremendous amounts of available data – the mother’s health during pregnancy, time and substance of feeding, even the microbiomes found in a baby’s excrement – to provide actionable recommendations for care teams.
But Warren remains inspired by these challenges and the chance to tackle a combined social and business problem. Ultimately, she believes that the consumerism of digital health will help loosen much of these restrictions because health data will become portable and owned by the patient rather than the provider or EMR company. Once that occurs, she envisions a dramatic growth in personalized care.
As a non-technologist, she has also worked hard to find the right tech lead for the company. Much of its early years were characterized by trial and error with outsourced tech development and some tech hires that did not work out. But she insists that having a tech co-founder is not a requirement for a technology business as long as trust and communication are evident between founding teams and partners.
