At the same, the freedom he’s getting at Old Trafford, that literal and figurative open wide space in which he can – and has to – roam, is not fair on Mainoo. He may want to do everything, but that is the enthusiasm of youth. The uncomfortable truth: he should not have to. He is being sold desperately short because of the flaws around him. Eventually that will become something to lament.
For now, though, the exuberance and the enthusiasm is quite enough because Old Trafford feels like the perfect playground for a young central midfielder with business on his mind. Mainoo missed the end of the madness in extra-time. 80 seconds after full-time of the maddest cup tie you’ve ever seen, he was carrying a teammate around on his shoulders. A fitting analogy, you might say.
