Here at Forbes, I blog about video games, tech hardware and pop culture. It's a blast! I've also contributed work to Retro Gamer, TechRadar, GamesRadar, Wired, plus several gaming and nostalgia books from publisher Scholastic.
It’s been a long while since I’ve tested a gaming laptop, and I’m honestly pondering why that’s been the case.
Still, arriving at Maingear’s new ML-17 for this review has been a very interesting experience, and it’s shown me that gaming laptops a) still have utility and value in 2024 and b) continue to present annoying limitations because of form factor and charging technology. The ML-17 that Maingear sent over is the base model, which is priced at $3,899.
The all-black shell is simple and attractive. It feels very durable, and the futuristic yet understated cooling vents look great. Additionally, there’s an option to customize the laptop with your own art, which I tried to do for this review, but according to the PR rep, my strange doodle wouldn’t have translated well to the computer casing, like in terms of resolution and whatnot. Oh well.
Opening the ML-17 also reveals its gorgeous 17.3-inch 240Hz QHD G-Sync display. Beside the beefy GPU and CPU, this is probably the actual star of the show, and the sheer real estate of the screen is quite something to behold. I’m sure the, with its 18-inch 4K display, still reigns supreme in this regard. However, what Maingear has shipped here is impressive, and stands as one of the largest laptop screens around, and certainly one of the largest I’ve ever used.
