Maine's working waterfront is receiving a $25 million boost to enhance its resilience against powerful storms following record back-to-back storms last January. The funding will be used to strengthen wharves and piers, including the implementation of new pilings, cross beams, and potentially a 300-foot wave attenuator in Portland Harbor. Officials emphasize the importance of proactive measures to address climate change and its impact on coastal communities.
PORTLAND -- A $25 million boost aims to make Maine 's working waterfront more resilient to powerful storms.
"The pier's designed to hold the pressure this way, and now Mother Nature's pushing it that way,” Portland Pier Manager Todd Colpitts said.Colpitts says most of the work they've done is below the water line, with new pilings and cross beams to keep the wharf from swaying and rocking in a storm. This week, the city council accepted the money on behalf of four wharf owners.
"It would protect DiMillos. It would Protect Chandlers Wharf. It would protect halfway down to Becky’s Diner," Colpitts said.
