Maine South High School's Class of 1973 will hold its 50th reunion.

Maine South High School alums are putting together a 50-year reunion for the class of 1973. They have more than 100 reservations now and are looking to get closer to 150. Though high school lasts four years, a group of alumni in Park Ridge has remembered those years for a long time.

Fifty years after the class of 1973 graduated from Maine South High School, organizers are putting together two days of festivities for the class’s reunion. “We’ve been out of school for 50 years — it doesn’t seem possible,” joked Park Ridge History Center president and reunion organizer Cheryl Williams. “It feels like we were just in high school,” she added. The main event for the 50-year reunion will be at Moretti’s Ristorante & Pizzeria in neighboring Edison Park on Sep. 30. The last day for alumni to get tickets is Sept. 15. The reunion is organized by five other organizers who also graduated from Maine South that year. Organizer Nancy Sundberg Abramovitz said that planning the reunion took about six months of preparation. “It’s like planning a wedding,” Abramovitz said, laughing. She added that 127 people had already bought tickets for the reunion.Williams calls the 50-year reunion “the big one,” in part because the class of 1973 has had previous reunions for the 25th, 35th, 40th and 45th year celebrations. She said this reunion so far has gotten the most interest and reservations since the 25th year reunion. Festivities for the 50-year reunion kick off with an away game for the football team on Sept. 29. The Maine South High School Hawks will play against the Glenbrook North High School Spartans in Northbrook. A section for the class of 1973 will be reserved on the visitors’ side. The next day, alumni are invited back to the high school for a one-hour tour. Williams said she is also opening up the Park Ridge History Center for the alumni to come in and see an exhibit on past businesses of Park Ridge, including some they might remember from when they went to school at Maine South. Williams said she is looking forward to seeing the people she went to high school with, even people that she didn’t know very well back then. Abramovitz said she is looking forward to seeing Maine South, especially after it“[The school] told us to be prepared because nothing looks the same. We’ll see about that,” Abramovitz quipped. Abramovitz also said she wants the see the technology and computer rooms students are using. “Kids are now learning in different ways than we learned back then. So that should be fascinating,” she added.
