The new 72-hour waiting period law goes into effect in Maine on Friday.
AUGUSTA -- The new law requiring a 72-hour waiting period to buy a gun is now in effect. The law requires those who purchase a firearm to wait three days before they can take it home.
Gov. Janet Mills allowed the bill to become law without signing it, saying she was conflicted and recognized valid arguments from both sides. The intention of the law is to prevent suicide deaths in the state. "I do believe this will help save lives here in Maine. It's not just based on faith. It's based on data and facts. We saw what worked in other states to reduce gun violence and the 72-hour waiting period is of the very effective tools,” said Nacole Palmer, of the Maine Gun Safety Coalition.
