San Antonio’s restaurant fantasy camp is a good time for kids (and not much else).
I aced grade-school English, man. We were reading Lord Byron, the poem that goes, “She walks in beauty like the night.” The teacher asked me what I thought it meant, and I said maybe Byron meant this woman was beautiful because the darkness made her personality more important than how she looked. Right or wrong, I got extra credit for that answer. But I was a 10-year-old kid then, back in 1973, the same year the Magic Time Machine opened in San Antonio.
Trapped in a world it never made, it made up half the plate they call Half and Half, served as one side of a solid bird cut clean down the middle, daring you to pull it apart bit by rigid bit. The other half? A limestone block of chalky barbecued pork ribs with a wet-nap packet right there on the plate, already smeared with barbecue sauce. Half and Half made one unholy mess.
