Magic Johnson managed to bring an already crazy season to an insane conclusion. Thankfully, hope remains.
Amin Elhassan, a former Suns executive, exclaimed, “even if you’re going to fire the guy tomorrow it’s insane that they haven’t spoken.”for The Athletic and peppered the piece with some amazing insight.As the season finalized its glamorous implosion, Johnson’s tactic had been less communication not more.
On Tuesday night, the entire world, including the team’s owner Jeanie Buss, was discovering just how little Magic could communicate. Buss learned along with the rest of us that she was now hiring.I am about to cry now. It's hard when you love an organization the way I love this organization. It's hard when you love a person like I love Jeanie [Buss]. I don't want to disappoint her.
But while his heart is purely purple and gold, it wasn’t exactly in this job. Johnson intimated the impetus behind this decision was perhaps not wanting to make another one,Tomorrow [the day after the Lakers' season ends] I would have to affect somebody's livelihood, and I thought about that, too. That is not fun for me. That is not who I am. And then I don't want to put her [Buss] in the middle of us.
And really, how much better were the Lakers going to be if Magic stayed? Many are treating this as the final nail in the Lakers coffin. I see it as one blast from the defibrillator. Spoke to Magic Johnson 1-on-1 after his shocking resignation and asked him if he owed it to Jeanie Buss to have called her personally to tell her he was leaving.
