BRISTOL, N.H.—Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan says she wants to build bridges as she tries to hold on to one of the most competitive Senate seats in the country next year.

Ms. Hassan, the former two-term governor in New Hampshire, is part of a group of 22 senators drafting bipartisan infrastructure legislation, which faces an initial deadline this week and late questions over how to pay foron improved highways, bridges, water systems and internet connections. On a recent rainy Friday, Ms. Hassan attended a 100th birthday party for a World War II veteran in Hebron, N.H., and then talked to local officials in Bristol about her work to expand broadband in their town and county, building on an“One of the reasons that there’s so much focus here on the infrastructure bill is people understand what that means,” she said.

Ms. Hassan’s efforts to reach across the aisle to get a major spending bill passed come as Republicans say she is one of their top targets in the 2022 midterms, in which the GOP is hoping to flip control of the 50-50 Senate. They say her support for key Democratic priorities puts her out of step with the state, which has two Democratic senators and two Democratic House members but a Republican governor and GOP majorities in the state legislature.
