Biden will not be criminally charged for classified documents that were found in his Delaware home and Washington, D.C., office.
Republican Congress members who support former President Donald Trump's MAGA movement criticized Joe Biden on Thursday after the president's own Department of Justice questioned his mental fitness, saying that his memory was worsening in a new report.
Special Counsel Robert Hur's report on the classified documents found at Biden's home in Delaware and his Penn Biden Center office in Washington, D.C., was released on Thursday.'In his interview with our office, Mr. Biden's memory was worse. He did not remember when he was vice president, forgetting on the first day of the interview when his term ended , and forgetting on the second day of the interview when his term began ,' the report stated. 'He did not remember, even within several years, when his son Beau died. And his memory appeared hazy when describing the Afghanistan debate that was once so important to him.'Newsweek reached out to the White House and Biden's 2024 reelection campaign via email for comment. When the news of the classified documents was made public in January 2023, Biden told the press that he was 'surprised' by the discovery. Biden cooperated during the investigation and because of this, and the fact that it would likely be difficult to convict him, Hur decided not to bring criminal charges against the president.'Mr. Biden would likely present himself to a jury, as he did during our interview of him, as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory,' Hur wrote in his report.Biden released a statement on Thursday saying that he was 'pleased' that no charges were brought against him.'I cooperated completely, threw up no roadblocks, and sought no delays,' Biden said. 'Over my career in public service, I have always worked to protect America's security. I take these issues seriously and no one has ever questioned that.'Meanwhile, in a letter circulating online that was addressed Hur and Deputy Special Counsel Krickbaum, the White House said, 'We do not believe that the report's treatment of President Biden's memory is accurate or appropriate ... In fact, there is ample evidence from your interview that the President did well in answering your questions about years-old events over the course of five hours.'Age and cognitive ability have been a major talking point in this election cycle as Trump, the GOP frontrunner, is 77 years old, and Biden, the Democratic incumbent, is 81. Critics on both sides have mocked Trump and Biden for gaffes when delivering speeches.Conservative lawmakers who have supported Trump in his 2024 bid for the White House were quick to call Biden's mental competency into question on Thursday.'If Joe Biden is not mentally fit to stand trial, then he certainly isn't mentally fit to be President of the United States,' Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, posted on X, formerly Twitter. 'It's time to do something about it.'House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, a New York Republican, shared the excerpt from Hur's report of Biden's worsening memory on X, writing, 'Democrats and their stenographers in the mainstream media may try to look the other way and brush this under the rug, but it is so glaringly obvious to the American people. This is truly a sad state for America with a President who is clearly unfit for office.''They are claiming he's too mentally incompetent to stand trial but competent enough to be President?' Representative Lance Gooden, a Texas Republican, posted on X.Representative Jim Jordan, an Ohio Republican, wrote on X, 'Today's report from Robert Hur tells us two things: There's a double standard of justice in this country. And Joe Biden isn't fit for office.'Trump criticized the hypocrisy of Biden not being criminally charged for having classified documents in his home, while the former president was incited in June 2023 concerning classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. The indictment came less than a day after the DOJ brought criminal charges against Trump, accusing him of mishandling presidential records by keeping them upon leaving office and then obstructing the government's efforts to retrieve them. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges and maintains his innocence in the case.'THIS HAS NOW PROVEN TO BE A TWO-TIERED SYSTEM OF JUSTICE AND UNCONSTITUTIONAL SELECTIVE PROSECUTION!' Trump wrote in a statement on Thursday. 'The Biden Documents Case is 100 times different and more severe than mine. I did nothing wrong, and I cooperated far more.''Deranged Jack Smith should drop this Case immediately,' Trump said about the classified documents case against him. 'ELECTION INTERFERENCE.'Newsweek reached out to Trump's campaign and the offices of Greene and Stefanik via email, as well as via phone to the offices of Jordan and Gooden for comment.
