To put it another way: everyone is very worked up because the biggest star in the world was running a bit late. So, you know, RIP rock ‘n’ roll. The O2’s curfew is 11pm Monday to Saturday, and 10.30pm Sunday – barely past the watershed – and given that Madonna is an artist who has changed the course of music history, you would think we could cut her a little slack.

I digress. But the point is that at big stadium shows – because much of this applies to most of the country’s biggest venues – it’s over before it’s even begun. “It” being, of course, the ancient art of rock ‘n’ roll.
