Sports-talk bloviator Chris Russo negotiated a compromise with Howard Stern that isn’t really going to please anyone.
Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, who has made a sports talk career out of hot takes, came up with a doozy when he spouted off with absolute certainty about which team would win the National League Championship Series.So certain was he that the Philadelphia Phillies would win the series against the Arizona Diamondbacks that the longtime radio and TV commentator bet his career on it before Game 6 Monday.
“To make a long story short, I’ve been wrong on Arizona from Day One. … I’m stunned they beat Milwaukee; I thought they’d get swept by the Dodgers; I never thought they’d even go back to Philly for a Game 6. I’ll try it one more time,” “I would not be stunned if they won tonight , I would be floored. And I’ll say this right now, and Bob Raissman, write it down: If they win the next two games and win this series in seven games — if they win, I will retire on the spot.”Russo split hairs, saying he meant only his radio gig. Claiming that he is “a retired Mad Dog,” he pointed out, “I can work!” because he appears often with Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim on “First Take.” Neither of them were buying that.
“You say that you have us and you can work, but you do know what this means,” Smith said. “I’m going to have the Arizona Diamondbacks’ back on this one. You can speak when spoken to. You will silence yourself when I say so on behalf of the Diamondbacks today. So any time I want you to zip it, the words I’m going to use are ‘Diamondbacks. Diamondbacks.’ Even though I did pick the Phillies to win myself. This show is going to be dedicated to the Diamondbacks shutting you up.
He further negotiated to have the sign read “liar and dope” and promised to contribute to the Diamondbacks’ charitable foundation.At this point, it seems only fitting to let Diamondbacks Manager Torey Lovullo, whose players chanted Mad Dog’s name during their locker room celebration, have the last word about using Russo’s comments for extra motivation.
