Here's everything you need to know about the human version, which is called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.
An Ayrshire farm has been placed under alert after mad cow disease was detected in one of its cattle - but can humans catch it, and what do the symptoms look like?
People can contract vCJD through eating beef products with central nervous system tissue from cattle infected with mad cow disease - even if they were infected years ago. The link between these two illnesses was discovered back in 1996 and since then, there have been strict controls on preventing meat from infected cattle entering the food chain - as is the case in Ayrshire.
At the moment, the only way you can be diagnosed with vCJD is through a brain biopsy, according to the National Institutes of Health. There isn't a blood test that can be carried out - but a noninvasive test is currently a 'medical priority'.
