This article delves into the history and design of the VF-4 variable fighter from the Macross franchise, highlighting its origins in video games and its lasting impact on the series. It also reviews a recent Hi-Metal R toy of the VF-4, praising its quality and articulation.
Macross Flashback 2012. This design is interesting on several counts, not least because of its gaming lineage, but we’ll get to that in a bit. In the story, the VF-4 was meant as the next generation of variable fighters after the VF-1 Valkyrie, so it would only make sense that we’d see prototypes of it in the anime and then later actually in use. While the game itself was pretty terrible and mostly unplayable, it was clearly part of a bigger mandate as far as the VF-4 was concerned.
was configured in the same way as the VF-4. It wasn’t until later we found out that these enemy mecha were, in turn, based on the It was clear that the transformational heavy lifting had been done before the VF-4's gaming appearance, but it was still fascinating to see how the design of such an obscure variable fighter would have such far-reaching influences. As for this toy, it’s part of the Hi-Metal R line, and while that normally means you tend to get big, chunky toys with lots of diecast, in the case of That said, this reduction in size hasn’t compromised the toy or its transformation. There are diecast parts for the joints and articulation that afford a sturdy transformation without the need for parts swaps. The sculpt and detailing are also very nicely done. Even though this is a smaller variable fighter toy, it’s still very accurate to the anime and game designs. This time around, the 2019 release includes a new themed stand, new box art, and a diorama background of Minmay from It is still a very nice toy, though, and the articulation is very nicely done. From a display standpoint, it also looks great just in fighter mode on the stand, which is something I did with the prior 2019 release a good few years ago. The upside is that this Hi-Metal R toy is much cheaper, costing around $130 compared to Arcadia’s then price tag of approximately $359. Although, good luck finding the Arcadia version online for anything close to that
