, seemingly harkening back to an early-aughts emo aesthetic — one that was never particularly healthy in how it viewed romantic relationships. Colson is roughly the same age as me and, while I don't know much about his early years, his look and attitude now remind me very much of the alternative, emo boys I deeply admired as a teen.
Women have been calling out sexism and toxic dynamics in emo culture for years. In a 2017 article forcalled “Unravelling the Sexism of Emo's Third Wave,” author Jenn Pelly wrote about the misogyny embedded in emo culture after sexual assault allegations against Jesse Lacey, frontman of the band Brand New, emerged.
The words we screamed along to at concerts no doubt influenced how many of us viewed romantic relationships in general. “I am suggesting here that there is a correlation between misogynist art, the young people who make it, and the younger people who consume it,” Pelly wrote.
