Padres third baseman talks publicly for first time since spraining his ankle on June 19, keeps doing more on-field activity each day
Asked Tuesday what he thought when he first injured his ankle on June 19, he replied, “What did you think?”
“The running thing is probably going to be the last thing that he feels really comfortable with,” Melvin said. “But I think each and every day, he gets that much better. Every day we kind of play it by ear and see how he responds to the workload.” Tuesday was the first time Machado spoke publicly since he sprained his ankle trying to beat out a grounder in the first inning of a game at Coors Field.
The Padres feared the worst when Machado slipped on the first base bag and rolled his ankle on his first step beyond the bag. But as he was able to put light pressure on the foot the next day, they made the determination to not put him on the injured list. The hope was he would be available to at least hit within the first 10 days. Wednesday will be the 10th day since the injury.
