Drivers have been warned of the changes
Motorists will face new speed restrictions on the M1 from today due to smart motorway systems being temporarily switched off for maintenance. The M1 through Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire will be impacted over several days, with technology such as stopped vehicle detection and electronic sign controls under maintenance.
National Highways has stated there will be no road closures but speeds will be cut where needed and extra safety measures are to be implemented. Affected areas include the M1 between Junction 25 and Junction 26 near Castle Donington, impacting journeys past East Midlands Airport both today and tomorrow from 10am until 3pm, reports Leicestershire Live.
Most significantly, on Thursday, November 28, the maintenance is set to disrupt all motorway systems in the region from 9am until noon. In preparation, National Highways said: "We have well-rehearsed plans and mitigations including extra traffic officer patrols, increased CCTV monitoring and reduced speed limits in locations that require these measures to be put in place."
