As Dallas gathered for a huddle late in the fourth quarter Wednesday, a Timberwolves fan a few rows behind the bench shouted at the Mavericks’ superstar, fueling — not fazing — Doncic’s swagger and satisfaction that, finally, Dallas’ offense found its rhythm.
“It was one guy talking to me a lot of times,” Doncic said. “I didn’t see him [at the end]. When we shot a lot of free throws, he left probably already, but you know, it gets me going. Talking to fans, I love that. It gets me going, but that’s a big win. Honestly I think we played great basketball today. We shared the ball and it was a great win.”
Much like this time last year, when Dallas played consecutive games against the Timberwolves early in their COVID-19 outbreak, a flurry of absences and returns forced coach Jason Kidd to again shuffle his lineup.Despite Powell back after two games, Kidd kept Wood as the starting center, the first time this season Wood and Doncic have started together when injuries weren’t a factor in lineup options.
Wood helped take pressure off Doncic as the Timberwolves — with All-Star center Rudy Gobert back for the first time in three games — used double-team traps and played bigs high on many defensive sets. Doncic finished the first half with 15 points , four rebounds, six assists and two steals in 18 minutes, while Kemba Walker worked as the first backcourt reserve for a second consecutive game.
