Mets' Luis Severino looked finished in the fourth, but then he kept going
New York Mets' Luis Severino throws during the first inning of Game 1 of a National League wild card baseball game against the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024, in Milwaukee.
Then, a gutsy comeback by the offense in the top of the fifth on Tuesday inspired the 30-year-old starter. He returned to the mound to retire the next six batters in a row to steady the Mets’ staff and give the bullpen, which has been overworked with six games over five days, a much-needed break. Severino began Tuesday by allowing three consecutive hits, walking two batters and hitting another to force in a run. By the end the first inning, he’d face eight batters and somehow escape with just two runs allowed.
In return, Severino provided the Mets with two scoreless frames. But in the fourth, he stumbled again. That’s when he allowed two more runs on three hits, coughing up the lead.
