Lucy holding a glass in Tell Me Lies Season 2.
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Tell Me Lies season 3, episode 7.Tell Me Lies is both exciting and excruciating for fans around the world, who are glued to their screens each week, and as the final episode of season 3 is due to be released, series creator Meaghan Oppenheimer rallies to defend Lucy Albright's actions.
Tell Me Lies began in 2022 and was created by Oppenheimer for Hulu and is based on the novel of the same name, as it follows the relationships between friends from college over eight years. It specifically focuses on Lucy and Stephen DeMarco as their toxic, co-dependent relationship causes lasting damage to not only themselves but everyone around them. In an interview with Decider, Oppenheimer spoke about the series finale and also rallied around her main character, Lucy, who has been facing the consequences of her actions as well as feeling the leftover sting from her past relationship with the king of toxicity, Stephen. However, the internet is deciding on who's worse, and Oppenheimer is ready to set the record straight before episode 8 airs, titled"Are You Happy Now, That I'm On My Knees?": "I would say, ‘Are you happy now?’ by the end of the season. ‘Are you happy now?!' I think that people have asked for her to be punished since Day 1, and I don’t think she deserves that at all. On the record, I think any punishment Lucy gets is way worse than anything she deserves. I want those people to ask themselves why they’re so much harder on female characters than men, because a lot of people are way harder on Lucy than they are on Stephen, and I think it is quite unfair." Oppenheimer has clearly painted a picture that even more trauma awaits Lucy in the series finale, which was stated to be the last of the series entirely. Due to the show's popularity, a season 4 may not be out of the question just yet. The official final episode synopsis says,"A scandal erupts at Baird College. When shocking truths come to light, consequences follow for everyone." During episode 7, Lucy appears frantic and flustered, and a heartbreaking moment shows Lucy staring at a portrait of herself at the beginning of her time at Baird before showing her now with the light dimmed in her eyes. Lucy begs Stephen to relinquish the tape or simply release it so she can stop harboring so much pain and guilt. To everyone's surprise, he hands it over, but it's unclear if that truly happened, as she has been suffering from memory loss and confusion of late. It's unclear what fate awaits Lucy as Stephen is far from done with his plans of destruction, but one thing is for sure, and that is the final episode is guaranteed to cause some heartbreak and plenty of drama.
