Two years following Lucy Dacus' whirlwind success with boygenius in 2023, she is the next of the three to officially announce she will be releasing a new solo album. Dacus is an indie rock darling with three incredible albums under her belt.
Her upcoming album, Forever is a Feeling, will feature Dacus' thoughtful lyricism doused in personal experience. This will be the singer-songwriter's first solo album in 4 years, following the release of Home Video in 2021. In the years since her last project, Dacus' sound has evolved, and she has experienced love and heartbreak that have fueled the creation of her new songs. Her solo return will be brimming with exciting features, intimate shows, and cinematic music videos. Here's everything we know about Forever is a Feeling so far, and what you can expect from Dacus' new project. Quick Links What Lucy Dacus Has Said About The New Album Dacus is full-force promoting her album and getting her fans involved Lucy Dacus announced the release date, title, and cover of her new album in an Instagram post on January 15th, but this wasn't the first time that fans heard about new music brewing. On January 7, the singer posted a TikTok, requesting submissions for a new music video with a snippet of her song"Best Guess" as the audio. The audio became a bit of a trend, creating organic marketing as more fans took a chance to be featured in a music video. She was looking for smooth, suave, hot mascs who are comfortable on camera for her new music video. Dacus revealed that the album would be released on March 28, and the album is currently available to be pre-saved on Spotify. The album's pre-save page reveals that the album will have 13 tracks, although the duration of the album is not currently known. The single"Ankles" is listed as track three and the second single"Limerence" is listed as track two. The opening track has yet to be revealed, and it is unclear if the album will have a title track. The singer has never had a title track on an album. Her 2018 album Historian comes close with a closing track titled"Historians," but she has never released a song that is the exact title of the album it is featured on. Dacus' casting call for"Best Guess" suggests that song will land somewhere among the 13 tracks on this album. The album is also said to have many exciting guest features. Variety reported that the album will feature: Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, Hozier, Madison Cunningham, Blake Mills, Bartees Strange, Jake Finch, Collin Pastore, and Melina Duderte. Dacus' journey with boygenius brought her so many amazing experiences; headlining slots at festivals, a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden, and three Grammys. However, the fame that came with the project burdened her with stress and overwhelming emotions. All three members of the band attended therapy to deal with this level of success and fame that was unprecedented in their lives. In an interview with Dazed, her first press interview since the boygenius era, Dacus shared that as difficult as fame is, she is grateful for the unimaginable life she has lived. I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone. But also, if you showed me this life in a lineup, I would pick it over and over. Music is an outlet for Dacus; it is the core of her self-expression. When experiencing so many conflicting feelings of gratitude, anxiety, love, and loss, she fell back on songwriting to give her strength. Usually, her songwriting process is reflective, writing about situations and feelings she had processed years ago, but with this album, she felt that she needed to write about her emotions as they hit her. When crafting an album, it is important to Dacus that the overarching themes of her songs are aligned to create a cohesive experience. Forever is a Feeling is an album about romantic love, making peace with the end, and accepting that forever isn't something that one should strive for but rather something that is felt. This album is her first in-depth exploration of romantic love in her solo career. What Has Been Released So Far The two singles, album art, and a beautiful music video Lucy Dacus has provided many glimpses into this album thus far. As previously mentioned, her songs"Ankles" and"Limerence" were released in January in conjunction with the album announcement. She also posted the album art on her socials to announce the album. On the cover of the album, Dacus is seen in an aged painting with a tattoo on her chest that reads"Forever Is A Feeling." The singer said that she wanted to convey how ancient the feeling of love is. Although love can be a new feeling to us, it is a feeling that people have been experiencing since the dawn of time. Paintings, sculptures, songs, and poems have documented the all-encompassing love that people have felt for one another throughout all of human history. "Ankles" begins with a steady build up of strings as Dacus begins to sing about bargaining with a lover, slowly giving into her desires as she builds to the chorus. She begins by suggesting the two just talk, developing into a chorus about giving into a sexual relationship that softens to doing crosswords together in the morning. The song is an ode to wanting what you can't have and relenting to your desires. "Limerence" is a slow waltz carried by a reverberating piano. The classical instrumentation is in contrast with the starkly modern lyrics about"blunts" and"GTA." The arrangement is gorgeous, and Dacus' ethereal voice floats above it effortlessly. The song takes you on a journey of inner turmoil as Dacus struggles with the decision to tell her partner that she is considering ending their relationship. The"Ankles" music video, released the same day, expands on the album's aesthetic of Romanticism, featuring a story about a muse that has broken out of a painting and is guided back to her frame through Paris by a security guard. The security guard is played by actor and model Havana Rose Liu, who is best known for the role of Isabel in Bottoms. Dacus is the muse, wearing a regal billowing red dress that engulfs the singer. Throughout the video, the two yearn for love, but Dacus must return to her frame at the end of their journey. Where Can You See It? Tour dates and special guests Lucy Dacus has already announced her tour supporting the album. She will be hitting the road in only a month, performing several shows before the album is released in late March. The main tour currently has 13 dates, hitting cities such as Philadelphia, Boston, New York, Chicago, Nashville, Dallas, and Los Angeles. There is a short-four show tour that was announced back on December 16th titled"An Evening With Lucy Dacus." These shows will be more intimate, where audiences will likely be able to hear many of the album's tracks long before its wide release. The tour will be supported by special guests Katie Gavin and jasmine.4.t. Gavin is best known as the lead vocalist of MUNA, a pop group signed by Phoebe Bridgers on her label Saddest Factory Records. She released her debut solo album in October 2024. The other special guest, jasmine.4.t, is also signed to Bridgers' label, and her most recent album was produced by all three members of boygenius. The tour dates span April and May, where Lucy Dacus will be playing in bigger venues than her 2021 tour.
