'Luca' is a small-scale and charming kid-friendly adventure from a time before Pixar films were expected to be monumental deconstructions of life's biggest questions.
stars Jacob Tremblay as a 13-year-old sea monster who gets that-ish itch to explore the world above him. His parents are understandably disapproving, as it's unlikely that the human world will take kindly to their kind. However, he discovers that he takes a hominoid form when he reaches dry land. He also finds a free-spirited peer in Alberto , who regularly goes above the sea to engage in humanoid adventures.
Their bond is immediate, and they quickly find kid-sized adventure and new friends in the nearby fishing village. That's it. No spoilers, but the villainy is limited, the stakes are human-sized, and the lessons are conventional"don't fear that which is different" moralizing.
Yes, I could be cynical and wonder if the young girl is a kind of"no homo" clarification, but A) she's not an explicit love interest for either boy, and B) the two young men aren't shy about hugging and emotional honesty. Regardless, there is merriment to be had as the three kids get ready for the big race and deal with the local bully . The conflicts are primarily internal, and nothing aboutfeels forced or frantic.
