U.S. national team midfielder Luca de la Torre was loaned to Major League Soccer 's expansion team in his hometown of San Diego by Spanish club Celta Vigo on Tuesday. The 26-year-old, who has earned 24 caps for the national team, signed a four-year contract with Celta in July 2022 and featured in 28 Spanish league matches in his first season and 32 in his second. This season, de la Torre was hampered by a thigh injury, making his sole league appearance on December 6 against Mallorca.
This came just four days after his season debut in the Copa del Rey. \San Diego announced that the loan agreement extends through 2025 and includes an option to purchase de la Torre's rights. Before his stint with Celta, de la Torre honed his skills in the youth ranks of San Diego Nomads and San Diego Surf before moving to Fulham's youth academy. He made seven appearances for the Cottagers in the second division from the 2016-17 season through 2019-20, in addition to several cup competition outings. He then transferred to Dutch club Heracles in August 2020, spending two seasons in the Netherlands. \While part of the 2022 U.S. World Cup squad, de la Torre did not see any playing time.
