Penrith has been the scene of two racial abuse incidents in recent seasons, but five-eighth Jarome Luai is confident there won’t be any repeat during the grand final rematch on Thursday night.

Jarome Luai joked he would lean on cashed-up teammate Nathan Cleary to pay his tripping and careless high tackle fines, while backing Penrith fans to be on their best behaviour when Ezra Mam and the Broncos visit Penrith for the grand final rematch on Thursday night.

The match review committee charged Luai for both offences on Saturday, but he can escape with two fines of $1800. The five-eighth is more determined than ever to stay on the park knowing it is his last year at Penrith – and especially wants to feature in blockbuster games like Thursday’s grand final rematch at BlueBet Stadium.

Mam was called a “monkey” in Las Vegas by Roosters prop Spencer Leniu, a three-time premiership winner at Penrith who remains good friends with Luai.Luai did not want to comment on the incident, for which Leniu was given an eight-match ban. However, the Panthers No.6 said he expected Mam to be treated with respect by Panthers fans.“Penrith fans are good – we’ll be good as a community,” Luai said. “I understand it’s not our place to say anything .
