Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears announced she is running in the 2025 Virginia governor race.

Sears' announcement followed months of speculation that she had her eyes on a bigger prize the lieutenant governor seat. She's hoping to be the next Republican governor, following in the footsteps of Governor Glenn Youngkin. Youngkin has already served for two terms and can't run again. She is the first Black woman to hold a statewide office in the Commonwealth. Soon, she could not only be the state's first Black governor but also be the first Virginia governor who is a woman.
But she's not the only woman with her eyes set on that prize. Democrat Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, who announced months ago that she was running for governor, is currently the only Democrat yet in the race
