David Barden, from Oxton, was taking part in a charity bike ride, 1600 miles from Agadir to Santander, when the disastrous 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck, killing more than 3,000 people. The retired deputy head at West Kirby School and College had been planning to stay at Hotel La Belle Vue in Tizi N’test, but because of the heat and exhaustion from travelling, he decided to stay in the closer Cafe Sunset.
She added: "He was resilient and restless. He has friends all over the world from Los Angeles to Beijing and Sydney because he was loyal to his core. We are all beyond devastated, shocked and in disbelief. I don't know what to do without him, we spoke every single day." Sarah said: "Without Hamza, who managed to clear the paths with authorities, we would not have found him. Hamza lost everything, his home and business and walked around eight kilometres to dig my dad from the rubble."
While another person added: "A tragic end of a life for a person determined to help others through his own personal pursuits." Mike Adamson, chief executive at the British Red Cross, also told the ECHOs: "Everyone at the British Red Cross is devastated to learn of the tragic death of our long-standing supporter Dave Barden in Morocco.
