Despite recommendations, the adherence to lipid screening practices among youths in the United States was low, with a screening prevalence of approximately 1 in 10 youths.

Only 11.3% of US youths aged 9-21 years are screened for lipid levels, with nearly one in three showing abnormal results. The prevalence of screening increases with age and body mass index , but fewer than one in five youths with obesity are screened.Researchers conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from the IQVIA Ambulatory Electronic Medical Record database, including more than 3.2 million US youths aged 9-21 years from 2018 to 2021.

Of those who were screened, 30.2% had abnormal lipid levels, with the highest prevalence among those aged 9-11 years .
