A study found that the genetic code used by the satellite viruses matches the genetic instructions in the helper viruses.
These helper phages are viruses that assist other viruses, known as satellite phages, in their reproduction and propagation. Additionally, they provide paramount functions, such as creating protective shells or replicating genetic material, which the satellite phages lack. This finding challenges former beliefs about viral interactions, highlighting a previously unknown aspect of how certain viruses depend on each other for their survival and reproduction.
Upon investigating Mulch and Flayer–the satellite-helper phage systems, scientists found that satellites lacked certain replication genes but had encapsidation machinery. Flayer also has a unique tail adaptation for co-infection with its helper.
