The Louisville Metro Police Department is seeking to block the release of records in the Breonna Taylor case, per a new court filing.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The news media is more interested in publishing stories than allowing a fair and thorough investigation, the Louisville Metro Police Department arguesThe Courier Journal sued Louisville police in May, demanding the immediate release of the department's investigative file into the fatal police shooting of Taylor, 26, on March 13.

"Once the toothpaste is out of the tube, it will be impossible to put it back in," the Jefferson County Attorney's Office, which is representing LMPD in the suit, wrote."To accept CJ’s position, one can only imagine the floodgates that will open if media outlets can insist on monitoring criminal investigations in 'real' time simply because they are curious about what investigators are learning from day to day. Or because media wishes to have video for its newscasts.

The department's filing says the issue is not if The Courier Journal will be able to access the records, but when. "It is just common sense that the earlier in an investigation, as evidence is coming in and being analyzed, the more speculative and less concrete will be the risk of harm, particularly when the facts and details are subject to conflicting versions," Guagliardo wrote.
