A school community in Louisiana is mourning, as a 17-year-old girl was killed in what police described as an apparent murder-suicide.

Dashayla Ardoin, of Mamou, and the suspect as Glenkeithan Robertson, of Opelousas.

"From the investigation, this case is believed to be a murder / suicide," Sheriff KP Gibson said in a statement shared on social media.Saturday along White Oak Highway."Lord, we pray for peace, strength, and understanding as we return to school tomorrow without one of our own. Please keep our students and staff, as well as the family and friends of Dashayla, in your prayers. Dashayla will always be remembered for her courage and bravery, her kind heart, and her beautiful smile.

The post included two photos of Ardoin, with one image showing her in a floor-length gown. The night she was killed, she and 21-year-old were possibly on their way to celebrate the school's homecoming events, according toThe school hosted its homecoming game the day prior to Ardoin's murder, a separate post on the school's Facebook page noted. Gibson confirmed the two "were traveling to the Mamou area when the incident occurred.

Robertson's social media profiles indicate he was a DJ. His Instagram account includes at least one photo of him with Ardoin.Tributes for Robertson poured in on Facebook, with many saying they were shocked to learn of his death. Gibson said no one else was harmed in the shooting. He also said the case remains under investigation.
