Louisiana on Saturday shut down in-person service at bars and issued a mandatory statewide mask order as coronavirus cases continue to rise, making it the latest state to roll back reopening plans amid a resurgence of the disease. ... [+]Localities can opt-out of the mask mandate if they have less than 100 cases per 100,000 people over a 2-week period.

Louisiana's outbreak is continuing to worsen, with cases increasing by 111% over the last 14 days, according toThe state reported more than 2,000 new cases for the second straight day on Saturday, while the positivity test rate is also increasing and now sits at 9.4%. Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, said at a press conference that Lousiana now has the third highest number of cases per capita in the U.S.

Though local governments had issued their own mask rules, the action is a reversal from just earlier this week, when Edwards said he wasn’t considering a statewide mandatory order, theLouisiana previously saw an increase in cases in April after Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans and elsewhere in the state“It’s become clear to me especially after the numbers we saw yesterday that our current restrictions are not enough," Edwards said.
