Louis Gossett Jr., the 'An Officer and a Gentleman' actor who became first Black man to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, has died at the age of 87.
Over an on-screen career that spanned seven decades, Gossett Jr. became the first Black man to win Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards in 1983; he received the same award at that year’s Golden Globes for. In 1977, Gossett Jr. was awarded the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Actor for a Single Appearance in a Drama Series for the miniseriesThe New York City-born Gossett Jr.
