Loud Fence supporters felt they had achieved something 'really special' by joining forces with the church to re-do the display, and say the vandalism is devastating.
Parish ioners at St Patrick's Cathedral in Ballarat came together with survivors of institutional child sexual abuse and their supporters on Saturday to re-tie ribbons to the fence. The Diocese of Ballarat and Loud Fence members will continue discussions on plans for a long-term memorial on cathedral grounds.
Three days later, the majority of the ribbons had been cut and removed from the fence in two separate targeted attacks. Ribbons have long been tied outside St Patrick's Cathedral, but parishioners removed them in March to allow for maintenance and re-painting work to the historic fence upsetting many survivors.Ongoing discussions between the parish and Loud Fence members led to an agreement to return the ribbons, together, to a section of the fence on Saturday.
The Diocese of Ballarat and Loud Fence are planning to discuss ideas for a permanent memorial on cathedral grounds.
