Lost Time Brewing Co.'s first taproom has opened in a building famous for its role as Mighty Mick's Gym in the 'Rocky' movies. The Kensington location, at the corner of Front Street and Susquehanna Avenue, draws in both 'Rocky' fans and craft beer enthusiasts.

The building that served as Mighty Mick's Gym in the ' Rocky ' movies has a new tenant: Lost Time Brewing Co.'s first taproom. Located at the intersection of Front Street and Susquehanna Avenue in Kensington, the triangular, brick building, recognizable to fans of the movie franchise, is now a gathering place for craft beer enthusiasts.

While the building's past as the training ground for Sylvester Stallone's Rocky Balboa, under the tutelage of Burgess Meredith's Mickey Goldmill, might initially draw in curious sightseers, Lost Time Brewing Co. aims to establish itself as a destination for beer lovers. Andrew Mattes, one of the partners behind the venture, along with Matt Iannelli and brewer Jake Dean, noted the building's unique history but emphasized their focus on providing quality craft beers and a welcoming atmosphere. Dozens of people, more than likely intrigued by the 'Rocky' connection, thronged the taproom during its opening weekend. Mattes, having spent time in Prague during college, found the influx of people from Eastern Europe reminiscent of his time abroad. He sees Lost Time as a small part of Philadelphia's history, a distinction he finds both humbling and exciting. The taproom itself, characterized by its simple décor, ringed with seating and boasting full windows on two sides, doesn't overtly play on the 'Rocky' theme. A few boxing memorabilia, lent by friends' families, adorn the space behind the bar, while the American lager, aptly named Mickey, pays a subtle tribute.Across the street, another building owned by Rafi Licht of Norris Square Development, houses a boxing-themed cafe. Lost Time's menu features snacks like soft pretzels and pretzel sandwiches, including the Balboa, a hearty creation featuring Italian sausage, peppers, onions, and Cooper sharp cheese on a toasted Parmesan soft pretzel. The bar boasts a selection of Lost Time beers priced at $7 and $8, seltzers from Two Robbers, Surfside, and Stateside at $9, and a draft margarita for $13. Dean's ginger beer is also available for $6, with an option to add a shot of well spirit for an additional $6. While Lost Time doesn't brew on-site, several contract breweries produce the beer under Dean's watchful eye. Dean, a University of Virginia engineering graduate who currently works for Lockheed Martin, embarked on his brewing journey in high school biology class. Armed with basic fermentation knowledge, he began crafting his own root beer, eventually graduating to hard cider made in the loft of his family's home in Medford Lakes. Dean's brewing passion blossomed further during his college years, leading to an internship at Devils Backbone Brewing. After working at Anheuser-Busch in Syracuse, N.Y., he returned to South Jersey for its milder winters. Lost Time made its debut during the 2022 Sunflower Philly community gathering, followed by pop-up events. The brewery's beer is currently distributed through Lost Time Brewing Co., 2145 N. Front St. Hours of operation are Wednesday and Thursday, 3 to 10 p.m., Friday, 3 to 11 p.m., Saturday, noon to 11 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 9 p.m.
