Reuters journalists in Myanmar give up on courts after latest appeal denied

By Kyaw Ye Lynn and Timothy McLaughlin April 23 at 7:08 AM NAYPYIDAW, Myanmar — Two Reuters journalists have lost faith in Myanmar’s judicial system after its Supreme Court rejected their latest appeal against charges of violating the country’s colonial-era secrets law, their lawyer said Tuesday.

It also has further tainted Myanmar’s civilian leader, Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who has the power to free the reporters through her effective control of the presidency. “Instead, they were victims of a police setup to silence their truthful reporting,” Gove said. “We will continue to do all we can to free them as soon as possible.”

“We are not losing hope at all,” he said. “Though Wa Lone and Kyaw Sow Oo decided not to carry on with judiciary system, they still have chance” through a presidential pardon or amnesty.
