A cat named Smokey, lost for over eight years, is reunited with his family after his microchip is scanned at a Long Island animal shelter.

After over eight years apart, a beloved family cat named Smokey has been reunited with his owners, the Schultzes. Smokey disappeared in 2016 while staying at a relative's house just as the family moved abroad. The loss was devastating for Danielle Schultz, who cherished a photo of Smokey with her young son Donovan. Unknown to the Schultzes, Smokey had been found years ago by a woman who took him in as a stray.

When she could no longer care for him, her son brought Smokey to the Town of Babylon Animal Shelter in Amityville. Years later, when the woman's son brought Smokey to the shelter, the staff scanned his microchip and traced him back to his original owners. Chris Elton, the shelter's director, explained that despite Smokey living with another family for several years, they followed their policy of scanning microchips and were able to reunite him with his rightful family. This heartwarming reunion brought immense joy to Danielle Schultz, who described the emotional moment when Smokey recognized her and purred contentedly. Though the details of Smokey's whereabouts between his disappearance and his reunion are unclear, the story emphasizes the importance of microchipping and keeping registration information updated. Elton shared the shelter's pride in facilitating this happy reunion after so many years. Smokey has now settled back into his life with his original family, lounging alongside a now-teenage Donovan. Danielle Schultz expressed her gratitude for the second chance to care for Smokey and highlighted the nostalgic and almost miraculous nature of his return. Smokey's story serves as a heartwarming reminder of the power of hope and the essential role of microchipping in pet reunions
