The 32-year-old firefighter, who was identified as Michael Altman, was critically injured Monday afternoon battling a blaze in the city's Rogers Park neighborhood. The fire was reported in a multi-story building along North Shore Avenue near North Ravenswood Avenue. His death comes almost 24 hours after the blaze broke out. "Members responded to the scene shortly before 11:30 a.m.," Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt said."While working to extinguish the blaze, firefighter EMT Altman sustained serious injuries and was transported to Stroger Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. We are heartbroken by yet another loss of our own. Michael gave everything in service to the people of Chicago, and we will never forget his courage and sacrifice. Our deepest condolences go out to the Altman family, fellow firefighters, friends and all that loved him and knew him." According to a fundraising page for the firefighter, the injuries were suffered when he fell through a floor and into flames below, resulting in burns to much of his body. The Chicago Fire Department has not yet released details on the injuries, however. "Today, the city of Chicago not only lost a public servant, but we lost a hero," Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said."Firefighter EMT Altman displayed an incredible amount of courage and bravery and strength and we are in deep sorrow as a city for this tragic loss ... Let this be a constant reminder of how important it is that we continue to put our arms around our first responders and continue to support them."Altman had been with the department for nearly two years. The fundraising page said he was a husband and father, with another child on the way. "He comes from a family with a long history of public service in the Chicago Fire Department.
