Opinion: Los Angeles voters really need to do a better job of picking city leaders

Mark Twain, if he were alive today, would have to revise his pithy saying about our electeds, and note instead: “There is no distinctly native American criminal class — except the Los Angeles City Council.”

Twain in his time fingered “Congress” as the inherent criminals, but these days members of the House of Representative are looking like Girl and Boy Scouts compared with the people elected to represent Angelenos. The latest to run afoul of the law is Councilmember Curren Price, charged on Tuesday with theft by embezzlement, perjury and conflict of interest for allegedly voting on projects involving developers tied to his wife’s consulting firm, then failing to report the connections, among other crimes.

And then there is the question of just who was his wife, as the woman he claimed to be married to, and who the taxpayers gave medical insurance, could not have been his wife, the District Attorney’s Office says, as he was already married to someone else. “It’s highly unusual for charges like this to be brought up against a sitting City Council member without any prior notice or discussion,” says Price’s spokesperson.
