California. - Forecasters said the mercury could reach as high as 112 Fahrenheit in the densely populated Los Angeles suburbs in the next week as a heat dome settles in over parts of California, Nevada and Arizona. A test project to tackle the urban heat island effect in a 10-square block area in Los Angeles has led to ambient air temperatures being reduced by as much as 3.5°F during extreme heat events, according to a new study.

“Even at street level, all the thermal environmental indicators showed net cooling benefits,” Taha told me. “The pedestrians in Pacoima overwhelmingly felt cooler.” “The feedback from the initial 10 blocks has been that street vendors are able to work later in the day and make more money for their families,” he told me.

Jeff Terry, vice president of sustainability at GAF added that while there is “no silver bullet” to fix larger issues like climate change, there are solutions that can be deployed at a local level to help address issues like urban heat islands.
