Pat Soon-Shiong, owner of the Los Angeles Times, admitted that endorsing Mayor Karen Bass was a mistake during an appearance on 'The Morning Meeting' as California grapples with devastating wildfires. Soon-Shiong argued that the Times should have prioritized electing leaders with real-world experience instead of solely focusing on political affiliation. He also criticized Bass for budget cuts to the fire department and the reported lack of functioning fire hydrants.
Pat Soon-Shiong , the owner of the Los Angeles Times, acknowledged Monday that endorsing Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for mayor in 2022 was a mistake. Soon-Shiong, during an appearance on the online show “The Morning Meeting,” stated, “So, at the L.A. Times, we endorsed Karen Bass . I think, right now ... that’s a mistake, and we admit that,” Soon-Shiong said. He attributed the newspaper’s misstep to the ongoing wildfires that have caused significant damage in parts of Southern California.
Soon-Shiong asserted that the L.A. Times should have focused on electing individuals with practical experience rather than solely on political affiliations. He questioned the current system of electing officials who have no prior experience in running businesses or managing operations. “Maybe the lesson we learned out of this catastrophe in California is to now vote not based on left or right or D versus R but perhaps based on competent or no experience in operating a job !!” Soon-Shiong exclaimed. He further criticized Bass for cutting the Los Angeles Fire Department’s budget by $23 million and pointed to reports of empty fire hydrants as evidence of her administration’s shortcomings.Soon-Shiong expressed his sympathy for those affected by the wildfires, emphasizing the need for competent leadership in times of crisis. When contacted for comment, a spokesperson for Bass's office stated that the mayor is dedicated to the safety and well-being of Los Angeles residents. The spokesperson emphasized that Bass has secured necessary resources to combat the fires and is developing a comprehensive recovery plan.
