The archive consists of photos, documents and personal items belonging to non-binary Latinx activist Lydia Otero, who worked with one of the first queer Latinx organizations in the U.S.

The Los Angeles Public Library has acquired the “Lydia R. Otero Archive,” consisting of photographs, articles, personal items and more belonging to non-binary Latinx activist and authorEnsuring their work becomes “part of the official record of the story of Los Angeles is very important to Dr. Otero,” library officials said in a July 31 news release.

“I wanted to be public, I wanted to be out,” Otero, now 68, said. “I wanted to organize with queers of color, and it seemed like Los Angeles was the place.” Though GLUU hasn’t been active since 1994, Otero said Bienestar became a thriving nonprofit in the early 1990s, working with Latinx and LGBTQ+ communities to connect them with health and social services.But Otero said they always felt a connection to the L.A. Public Library, remembering childhood summers spent there. They were also part of the construction crew that helped renovate the downtown L.A.
