“There’s too much pain, there’s too much deep injury to the soul, to the spirit of this city,” O’Farrell said. At another point in the hourlong recording, Martinez called Indigenous immigrants from the Mexican state of Oaxaca ugly, and made crass remarks about Jews and Armenians. O’Farrell said he had spoken to Cedillo, and “I sense that he is making some progress toward that decision.” O’Farrell said he and others haven’t been able to reach de Leon.
