'Lore Olympus'
After years of anticipation and hopes from fans, Lore Olympus is officially being adapted for the screen. Prime Video has announced that it has ordered an adult animated series based on Rachel Smythe’s hit WEBTOON webcomic, with the show set to premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
The series is produced by WEBTOON Productions and The Jim Henson Company, marking the latter’s first-ever adult animated series. The adaptation brings one of the most-read webcomics in the world to television, following the conclusion of the original series in 2024 after a six-year run. A Global Phenomenon Heads to Prime Video As Animation… Again First launched on WEBTOON in 2018, Lore Olympus became one of the most-read webcomics in the world, amassing more than 1.8 billion global views. The series is a stylish, contemporary retelling of the myth of Persephone, blending ancient Greek mythology with modern themes of power, trauma, identity, and forbidden love. The comic also made history as the first title to win an Eisner Award, a Harvey Award, and a Ringo Award for Best Webcomic or Digital Book in the same year, with its graphic novel adaptations later becoming New York Times bestsellers. “I am beyond thrilled to partner with Prime Video, The Jim Henson Company, and WEBTOON on the series adaptation of Rachel Smythe’s wildly popular webcomic, Lore Olympus,” said Julia Cooperman, who will serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. “Reading Lore Olympus, I was reminded of the enduring power of these tales, which echo through so much of our modern-day storytelling. We can’t wait to share this frisky, soulful, and timely reimagining of Persephone and Hades’ story with new audiences and longtime readers alike.” David Madden, President of WEBTOON Productions, emphasized the scale of the fandom behind the series, stating, “With stunning artwork, rich storytelling, and unforgettable characters, Lore Olympus and Rachel Smythe have built a passionate global fandom clamoring for more.” Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company, called the project “deeply inspiring,” adding that Smythe’s approach to mythology “is as relevant today as ever,” while noting the significance of the studio’s move into adult animation. Prime Video’s Head of Animation Melissa Wolfe echoed that sentiment, praising the collaboration as “an exciting addition to Prime Video’s growing animation slate.” Dive deeper—subscribe for Lore Olympus coverage Subscribe to the newsletter for in-depth coverage of the Lore Olympus adaptation and other major entertainment adaptations—production context, creator insights, casting and studio developments—so you'll get curated analysis that clarifies what this project means for the industry.
