Some people in our area are in a bit of a sticky situation.

FILE - A smashed spotted lanternfly sits on the ground in New York, Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022. The Illinois Department of Agriculture said a sighting of one of the winged adult insects was reported on Sept. 16, 2023, at an undisclosed location in the state. Department staffers visited that area and found a “moderately populated area of spotted lanternfly,” the state agency said.

The invasive spotted lanternflies, which are all across the state, are leaving behind a mess on cars and patios. The nice term for it is 'honeydew.' Essentially, what this is, is the undigested plant sap that's gone through the spotted lanternfly," Scott Baker, and extension agent with the Virginia Cooperative Extension, said. "What's happening is that they're excreting that, that's what people are noticing.""If it's a high enough infestation it almost looks like it's raining off of the trees.

"Depending on each situation, it may be appropriate to treat trees individually with insecticide to control the adults. For most people, that's not going to be the answer, but it is an option if people want to consider it, if they're just have such a problem with this sooty mold and everything. It's not too late, they could still do that this season.""They'll all be gone, at least this cycle, with the first good, hard frost, this fall," he said.

If people have questions, please have them reach out, and we can give one-on-one advice for specific recommendations for their situation," he said.
