These inspiring people of faith spent decades achieving results for the people they served with distinction.

Upon entering the seminary, I befriended Gregory Studerus, who was two years ahead of me. Two years later, his first assignment was St. Aloysius, Jersey City. And two years after that, I was also assigned there. We spent eight years ministering to a very large, vibrant parish with two schools and plenty of programs. He started the first Hispanic ministry there, which is still very strong.

I would consider Studerus one of the outstanding religious leaders I have known and interviewed in Hudson County through my decades of writing the Faith Matters column. He is effective, humble and caring, as are the others I cite here. Way down Kennedy Boulevard right over the Jersey City border into Bayonne was Marist High School. For nearly seven decades, the Marist Brothers sponsored the school an all-boys school at first that eventually went co-ed. The brothers were quite numerous on the faculty and modeled a community spirit that informed the ambience of the school. No one typified them more than Brother William Maske, who taught at the school as the longest serving of any brother until it closed in 2020.

So, too, Imam Muhammad Alhayek at the North Hudson Islamic Center. The well-educated Jordan native was tasked with outreach, and he helped the surrounding community understand Islam. They were also welcome to participate in various community events. As a second grader at Holy Rosary School in Downtown Jersey City, I met Sister Ascenza Tizzano, a young Religious Teacher Filippini, one day at the water fountain. She asked me what I wanted to be, and I answered, “a priest.” Fast forward and Tizzano is rounding out her six-year term as the Mother General of the community in Rome. She represents the many Maestre who taught tens of thousands of students for over a century at Holy Rosary, Mt.
