com/1g7I72TjCUMANILA—Nicanor Faeldon late Wednesday night bade farewell to the Bureau of Corrections after he was fired by President Rodrigo Duterte amid public outcry over the early release of heinous crime convicts.

Faeldon was all smiles as he posed with his staff at the agency, a photo provided by his lawyer Jose Diño Jr. showed. He also packed up his things."My commander-in-chief/appointing authority has spoken. I am a marine and a marine does as he is told. I most humbly bow to my commander-in-chief's order without any hard feelings," he said in a statement.

Faeldon came under fire following the release of high-profile convicts, including the 3 people convicted for the 1997 murder of the Chiong sisters in Cebu, for supposed good behavior. He also approved the release of former Calauan, Laguna mayor Antonio Sanchez, who was convicted in the killing of University of the Philippines Los Baños students Eileen Sarmenta and Allan Gomez in 1995. He held back after public outrage.

Faeldon is no stranger to controversy. It was under his watch as Bureau of Customs chief when some P6.4-billion worth of shabu slipped past port inspections in 2017.—With report from Mike Navallo, ABS-CBN News
