The singer died from complications related to ALS.

Joe Bonsall, a tenor singer and one of the longtime band members of the Oak Ridge Boys, died Tuesday from complications related tosince 2022 after a near-death experience when doctors found multiple pulmonary embolisms in his body requiring him to stay in the hospital for six days.

Bonsall was born on May 18, 1948 in Philadelphia, and he spent give decades as a member of the Oak Ridge Boys singing on tracks like “Elvira,” “Bobbie Sue” and “American Made.” While he was with the band, he was the member of the Grand Ole Opry, the Philadelphia Music Hall of Fame, the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. In 2015, he was inducted along with his Oak Ridge Boys bandmates into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Outside of music, Bonsall wrote 11 books, including a memoir called “I See Myself” that is set to be released in November. Last September, Bonsall went on tour with the band for their “American Made: Farewell Tour” before making the decision to retire in January.
