Radio voice Greg Schulte won’t be on the road for Diamondbacks games this season.
Chris Garagiola, who joined the team this season as the team’s pre- and postgame radio host, will fill in for Schulte on the road.“I turned 70 in December,” he said, before noting that this was his 25th season with the Diamondbacks. “That’s a pretty good number — 70 and 25. We’ll see how long we go after this.
“I’ll miss being with the ballclub and being with the radio and TV crews on the road. But I’ll be watching. I’ll be tuned in to our radio guys every night.”Drew Ellis, who started the first two games of the season at third base, was on the bench on Saturday, replaced by Sergio Alcantara. Ellis went just 3 for 25 in spring training but wound up the Opening Day starter after Josh Rojas’ injury in large part due to his defense.
“ want to show up and do well for their club,” bench coach Jeff Banister said. “They may push a little harder. I like what I’ve seen from him in his ability to kind of separate the offense and defense. We’ve seen some swings that, inside the at-bat, that show us some promise. … I believe that as he settles in, that approach is going to tighten up and he is going to be able to contribute in those at-bats.
Ellis was hitless in four at-bats in the first two games. He also committed a defensive miscue that cost the Diamondbacks a run, throwing wildly to first after belatedly picking up a slow roller he initially appeared to think might go foul.Banister declined to answer a question about the club’s rotation plans after Tuesday, when right-hander Zac Gallen is scheduled to make his season debut. “I’ll let Torey announce our rotation for you going forward,” Banister said.
